Terpsichore … (“delight of dancing”) was one of the nine Muses, [Greek Mythology] ruling over dance and the dramatic chorus. She lends her name to the word “terpsichorean” which means “of or relating to dance”. She is usually depicted sitting down, holding a lyre, accompanying with her music to the dancers’ choirs. She is sometimes said to be the mother of the SirensAchelous. Her name comes from the Greek words…”delight” and…”dance”.

She has been depicted in many art forms through the centuries, most noteably in the medium of sculptures and paintings though in more modern times she, and the references to her name, Terpsichore and Terpsichorean, have been used in relation to many forms of dancing and other theatre arts. Here are some images artists have rendered of what Terpsichore may have looked like. My personal favorite is the photo at the of Darcy Bussell depicting Terpsichore in George Balachine’s highly acclaimed ballet: Apollo.

The Roswell Terpischorean Workshop will be held at Miss Minnie’s School of Ballet, located at 307 E. 19th St, Roswell, NM 88201.

Transportation

There are three nonstop flights daily from DFW to Roswell. Please make arrangements to arrive on Sunday, June 15 for registration and to leave on Saturday, June 21. Arrangements will be made to transport the participants from the airport to the motel or the workshop and to return them to the airport.
